Chapter 4

Blaze

As much as I want to take Nova back to the Raging Angels compound and hide her away in my bed, I admire her strength and her conviction to face the consequences of her choice, even though I’m sure it will be unpleasant. So, I turn the bike back toward Blackwell, following her directions to an apartment complex overlooking the canal.

Once we’re off the bike, she stares up at the place for a long time, seeming to gather her courage.

“I’m going to go in with you,” I tell her.

“You don’t have to do that,” she says automatically.

But I shake my head. “Yes, I do. I want to make sure you’re okay.” And if that douchebag who cheated on her is in there, I’d like to give him a piece of my mind.

Her apartment is what I would expect from a law student—nice enough, but crammed with books, snacks, and stacks of laundry waiting to be done. Nova makes a beeline straight for the shower, telling me to make myself at home. But it’s hard to relax when I know she’s naked just a room away, water glistening on her ivory skin, sliding down her curves, erasing my touch. It takes every ounce of my willpower not to follow her in there and take her against the tile walls. To slam inside of her and make her scream my name.

To make her mine and ruin her for all other men.

I look around the apartment to distract myself, poking through the kitchen to get an idea of what she likes and looking at the framed pictures on her bookshelves beside her textbooks and law books. There are a few of her with her parents, but none of the ex-fiancé that I can find. On her desk, there’s one of Nova as a teenager standing in front of an amusement park with a slightly older woman. The woman has pink hair and laugh lines, but her eyes are the same sparkling brown as Nova’s.

“That’s my Aunt Ellis,” Nova says, startling me. I turn and find her standing behind me towel-drying her hair. She’s wearing leggings and a t-shirt, but she’s still stunningly beautiful. I think it likely has to do with the easy, relaxed smile on her face.

“You’re close?” I ask about her aunt. She’s mentioned her a few times over the last couple of days.

Nova nods, crossing the room to look at the picture with me. “Yes. She’s estranged from the rest of the Roberts family, but she practically raised me.” She taps the picture in the frame. “This was my sixteenth birthday. My parents were in Europe and forbade me from having a party, but it’s not like I had a lot of friends to celebrate with anyway. So Ellis and I drove down to Florida for the weekend. It’s one of my favorite memories.”

“Where is she now?” I ask, following her into the kitchen.

“She’s still living independently, but it’s getting hard for her.” She opens the fridge and pulls out two bottles of beer.
